"Galaxy Gems" is a gem

By RUTH FLOWERS-WORTHINGTON

Galaxy Gems is no mere foray into science fiction with alien life forms taking center stage, but instead a compelling glimpse into the age old fight between right and wrong that has both troubled and elevated the human race since their beginning.

Author George Duncan takes the usual premise of good and evil setting it down into an unusual place - the universe of the 23rd century.

The majority of the stories in Galaxy Gems feature Skyhawk Commander Sebastian Dann McCloud. McCloud, along with his youngest recruit, Tequesta and the rest of the squad must not only deal with the military problems of their time and place, but spiritual puzzles as well.

In the story, "When the Sacred Ginmill Closes" McCloud must face an ethical problem of temptation. However, the author does not make it easy for his hero or the reader with an effortless choice between good and evil, but tugs at both heart and brain with an authentic moral dilemma.

Duncan writes that his "No Eye Hath Seen" was inspired by the scripture stating man must live by faith and not sight. It is a pleasant premise, but with an underlying effect that is both uncomfortable and troubling to the characters in this story.

Galaxy Gems entertains, but does more. The stories make you think, make you reflect, and make you wonder. And most of all, this collection of short stories does exactly what a good writer hopes they will do, and that is leaving the reader wanting more.
